How to Keep Your Property Safe in the Summertime

Summer's a great time to relax, take a break or head off on holiday, but it’s also when homes can be more at risk. With longer days, open windows and more people out and about, burglars often take advantage. Whether you're a homeowner or a landlord, here’s how you can keep your property safe while you enjoy the sunshine.

Lock Up Properly, Even During the Day

It might seem harmless to leave a window open while you pop to the shop or sit in the garden, but that’s all it takes for someone to slip in unnoticed. Make a habit of locking windows and doors whenever you leave the house.  Don’t leave keys near doors or in view, either, especially patio doors or letterboxes.

Don’t Advertise Your Holiday

As tempting as it is to post holiday snaps in real-time, think twice before broadcasting that your house is empty. Save the updates for when you get back. If you’re going away for more than a few days, ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on things, take in the post and maybe even open and close curtains to make the place look lived-in.

Keep the Garden in Check

An overgrown front garden or uncut grass can be a clear sign that no one’s home. Before you head off, give the garden a tidy or arrange for someone to help with it while you're away. Also, don’t leave ladders, tools or anything else lying around that could help someone break in.

Use Timers and Smart Tech

Simple plug-in timers for lamps can help your home look occupied in the evening, especially once it starts getting dark again. If you’ve got smart tech like video doorbells or cameras, check everything’s working properly before you go. They’re not just useful for keeping an eye on the place — they can also help deter anyone thinking of snooping around.

Be Careful With Spare Keys

Avoid hiding spare keys under mats, flowerpots or anywhere obvious. If you need someone to check on the house, give them a key directly. Better still, consider a key safe with a code, and change the code afterwards for added peace of mind.

If You’re a Landlord

If you rent out a property, summer might be when tenants head home from uni or take extended holidays. Remind them to lock up, take valuables with them and report anything unusual before they leave. It’s also a good chance to check things like garden fences, outdoor lighting and locks during routine visits.

Summer should be about enjoying yourself, not worrying about your home. A few simple steps can go a long way in keeping your property safe and secure — whether you're staying put or heading off somewhere warm.
